The Good Apple Bible Lesson

Print

In A Nutshell

This heart Bible lesson uses an apple to show children that people, like an apple, can look shiny and pretty on the outside, but the inside (heart) might not be so good. As Christians, we should strive to have a good, clean heart.

The Good Apple Bible Lesson

Ages

Preschool, Elementary

Scripture

Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. Psalms 51:10

What You Will Need

  • 3 fresh apples
  • Food coloring
  • Syringe or wooden skewer
  • Knife
  • Bible

Preparation

Shine apples to make them look as good as possible. Mix 1 drop of red, yellow and blue food coloring to make a brown/black liquid.

  • Syringe method: put in syringe and inject into top of one apple close to the stem.
  • Needle method: Insert needle into top of apple, close to the stem and as deep as you can. Drop food coloring into hole.

Let set several hours to overnight to seep into the apple.

Lesson

I have an apple. (Show "good" apple). It looks perfect. It has a pretty red color, a nice shape. It looks really good. Does it look good enough to eat? I think so. Would you say this is a good apple? (Children should respond, yes).

Let's look inside at the heart of the apple. (Cut apple in half and show the heart shape of the inside of the apple. I like to have a back-up apple on the off-chance that it has a bad inside). Just like us, the apple has a heart inside that is good too.

How about this apple? (Show food colored apple). It looks perfect. It has a pretty red color, a nice shape. It looks really good. Does it look good enough to eat? Would you say this is a good apple? (Children should respond, yes).

Let's look at the heart of this apple. (Cut apple in half and show discolored inside). Does it look so good now? Why not? Who wants to eat it now? So just because something looks good on the outside, doesn't mean it's heart is good.

How about people? Are some people like this? Have you ever met someone that was really pretty on the outside, but not so pretty on the inside? Maybe they were mean.

Can we do much to change how we look on the outside? (Encourage children to respond with fix their hair, wash their face, wear pretty clothes, etc.) We can polish ourselves up a bit, but mostly we have what God has given us to work with.

What about our insides? Let's look at the Bible to see what God has to say:

Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. Psalms 51:10

As Christians, what kind of apple does God want us to be most like? (Children pick the good apple). We want to have a good, clean heart. What are some ways we can make our heart clean? (Have children respond with things like:

  • Do good deeds
  • Help others
  • Listen to our mom's and dad's
  • Say our prayers
  • Go to church
  • Read the Bible
  • Do what Jesus would do.

Prayer

Dear Lord, Please help us to be good Christians. Help us to remember that it is more important to be pretty on the inside, with a clean heart, than be pretty on the outside. Amen

Extras

My kids wanted some apple to eat after the lesson, so you may want to have more on hand to slice and share.
