Jesus Walks on Water Bible Lesson

In A Nutshell

In the Jesus Walks On Water Bible Lesson, children learn a valuable lesson about having faith that Jesus will be there for them in times of need.

Elementary, Tweens

"... You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt." Matthew 14:31 "... Truly you are the Son of God." Matthew 14:32

What You Will Need

  • Set of keys
  • Big piece of colored construction paper with word "keys" on it
  • 4 different sized boxes from very small to very large

  • Attach the paper to the ring of keys.
  • Set out all four boxes on the floor or on a table.

We’re going to play a game today using what I have in my hands. Does anyone have any idea what it is? (Keys). How did you know? (Because it said it on the paper). I am going to hide my keys and I am going to have you see if you can guess where. I want everyone to turn around and face the back wall for a moment. Shut your eyes and don’t peek.

(While the kids aren’t looking, remove the paper from the keys (putting it somewhere where they won’t see it), and hide the keys under the smallest box).

Everyone can turn around and open their eyes. I have hidden my keys under one of these boxes and I would like to see if you can tell me where. (Start with the first child and have them guess a box. Go down the row until everyone has picked a box. Most of your children will pick a larger box thinking the keys with the paper won’t fit under the smallest box).

(Start with one of the larger boxes. Lift it up to show nothing under it. Go through all the boxes saving the smallest one until last).

How many of you chose one of the large boxes? How come you didn’t pick the smallest one? (Because we thought it was too small). Was it too small? (No). You were looking for a place that would hide more than the keys. It was for the keys and the paper. You were looking for something different than what was hidden. Did you find it? Most of you didn’t.

Bible Lesson

One evening Jesus and his disciples were on the shore of the Sea of Galilee. Jesus decided to go into the hills to pray. The disciples wanted to go to another town. They got in a small fishing boat and planned to row across the water to the other side. As they rowed, it started getting dark. The winds picked up and blew stronger and stronger across the water making the waves get bigger and bigger. It started to rain and the waves began to toss the small boat up and down. The disciples had no where to hide from the storm. The wind became too strong for them to row against. They were very frightened.

Instead of getting closer to shore, they were being swept further out to sea. After nine hours of rowing, they were about three miles out on the water. They were exhausted. (Does anyone have any idea how far three miles is? Try to give them an example of someplace that is about 3 miles from your church or where you are at.) As they were about to give up hope, they looked up and saw someone coming across the water toward them. This person wasn’t in a boat. He was walking on the water. At first they thought it was a ghost and they were afraid. The man said, "It is I; don’t be afraid." It was Jesus!

Peter, one of Jesus’ disciples called out to him, "If it is really you, tell me to come to you on the water."

So Jesus told him to come.

Peter got out of the boat and stepped on the water. One step, then another, then another. He was walking on the water too! Then he looked down at the deep water below him and became afraid. He began to sink in the water. He cried out for Jesus to help him.

Jesus reached out and lifted Peter up then they climbed into the boat. At once, the winds stilled and the waves became calm water. All the men worshipped Jesus and called him the Son of God.

  • Why did Jesus not come to help the disciples sooner? (He waited until they needed him most. He was testing them to see if they had true faith).
  • Why did Jesus walk on water? (He wanted to show them that he was greater than the raging see and no matter how big our problems might seem, Jesus can overcome all. Sometimes the things we are most afraid of will bring us closer to God).
  • Why didn’t they know who Jesus was? Think about our activity today with the keys. (They weren’t looking for Jesus so they didn’t see him. Their "fear" overcame their "faith"). When we are in trouble and need help, who should we look for? (Jesus).
  • What happened when Peter got out of the boat to join Jesus? (He walked a few steps on the water then started to sink. Jesus saved him).
  • Why did Peter sink? (Because he took his eyes off of Jesus).
  • What happened when Jesus climbed into the boat? (The wind stilled).

Dear heavenly Father,
Thank you for all that you do for us. We are sometimes like Peter. Sometimes when we have a problem, or things aren’t going how we want them to, we sometimes forget to look for you. Help us to remember that you are always there for us. We know we can trust you to help us when we really need you. When times get bad, we will remember to look for you.
