Joshua At Jericho Bible Lesson

In A Nutshell

When faced with conquering the walled city of Jericho, the Bible lesson of Joshua and his army teaches how they relied on their faith in God and were obedient. Being obedient is not always easy, but as we have faith that God is always looking out for what is best for us, obedience comes easier.

Bible Lesson

God had promised his people a new land when they left Egypt. They followed Moses, then Joshua as they wandered for many years in the wilderness looking for the Promised Land. One day they found it, but there were people already living there. Those people lived in a walled city called Jericho. The walls were very tall and very strong.

Joshua looked at that big wall and scratched his head. He wasn’t sure what to do. He decided to send it two of his men as spies. They were to sneak into the city and try to figure out the best way to attack. The two brave men made their way inside the walls.

The king soon learned about the two spies, and he sent his soldiers to capture them. The two spies met a woman named Rahab who lived in a house what was part of the wall. She agreed to hide them. They crawled up into the thatched room of her house out of site. When night came, the two spies threw a rope out one of Rahab’s windows and lowered themselves down the outside of the wall to safety.

The two spies reported to Joshua what had happened, but they had not figured out a good way to attack the city. Joshua still didn’t have any answers. He wasn’t sure how they were going take the city, but God knew. God told Joshua how to do it and this is what they did.

(Smaller children: Have children act out the rest of the story either by playing Round and Round, or pretending to be the army and actually walking around the wall of boxes the pushing them over when they give a shout. For slightly older children, use the Jericho Falling Walls and some plastic people to act out the rest of the story. When the people shout, pull the fishing line and the walls will fall down).

Joshua and his army marched around the outside of the city walls once a day for six days. On the seventh day, they marched around the city seven times. The priest blew their trumpets and the whole army gave a shout. Then an amazing thing happened. Those great big stone walls began to shake, and crack, and suddenly the walls of Jericho fell down with a big crash. BOOM!

When the great cloud of dust settled, Joshua and his army marched into Jericho and took over the city. The two spies ran to Rahab’s house and helped her and her family to safety.

  • If someone told you to do what God told Joshua and his army, would you think it would work? (No)
  • Why did Joshua and his army do what God told them to do? (They had faith in God and what He could do so they obeyed him and triumphed over the people of Jericho).
  • What was Joshua’s secret weapon? (God)

Dear Lord, in our life, we know in our heart what is right and what is wrong. We know what you want us to do, and we know we should obey you in all things. Even if we don’t always understand why, you always know what is best for us. Knowing that you will always be with us and care for us is what faith is all about. Thank you, Lord, for being there for us always.
