In A Nutshell

During day two of The Amazing Time Machine VBS, Junior Scientists are tasked with the mission of answering the question; How do we become closer to God? We start by listening to him. So much of life is full of distractions. From friends and computers to school and sports, a child’s attention is focused on things other than God. The first step in building a better relationship with God is to listen to Him. This Listening To God Bible lesson about Moses and the burning bush, focuses on how to deal with the distractions and focus on God. This Bible lesson is part of The Amazing Time Machine VBS., but can also be a stand alone Bible lesson.

Exodus 3:1-15

Memory Verse

“He who belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.” (John 8:47)

What You Will Need

  • Bibles
  • Chalk board or news print and markers
  • Biblical scene decorations. See decorating ideas for scene background templates and other props.
  • Props for the skit (See below).
  • Script for actors (See Downloads Below).

Moses and The Burning Bush Skit

Actors: Moses, narrator voice, God’s voice

Scene: Horeb Mountain in the time of Moses. The lighting is dim. It is a dessert mountain scene with a flock of sheep. (See decorating ideas for scene background templates and other decorating ideas). Have several bushes around. Sign that reads: “Horeb, Mountain of God”. Moses is sitting on a rock holding a staff with his back to the bushes.

You Will Need:

  • Moses dressed in biblical times with a headdress, staff and sandals.
  • Stuffed or cardboard sheep scattered around the scene.
  • Burning bush that will light up as if on fire.
  • iPod with earphones
  • Print the Amazing Time Machine Bible Lesson Day 2 Skit script for your actors.

Script 1:
(Suddenly one bush lights up as if on fire and makes a whooshing noise that causes Moses to whirl around and look).

God: Moses! Moses!

Moses: Here I am.

God: Do not come any closer. Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground. I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.

(Moses, is afraid. He quickly removes his sandals, kneels to the ground and hides his face).

God: I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned about their suffering. So I have come down to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land into a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey — the home of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites. And now the cry of the Israelites has reached me, and I have seen the way the Egyptians are oppressing them. So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt.

Moses: Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?

God: I will be with you. And this will be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God on this mountain.

Moses: Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, “The God of your fathers has sent me to you,” and they ask me, “What is his name?” Then what shall I tell them?

God: I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: "I am has sent me to you".

God: Say to the Israelites, “The Lord, the God of your fathers — the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob — has sent me to you. This is my name forever, the name you shall call me from generation to generation.

(The fire goes out. Moses sits in silence for a moment looking stunned, then stands up and exists the stage or room).

Discussion:

  • What did God use to speak to Moses? (A burning bush).
  • What was special about the burning bush? (It burned but didn’t burn up).
  • Do you think that before that moment, if someone had asked Moses how he would envision a talk with God that he would have said it would be through a burning bush?
  • What would have happened if Moses had been listening to his iPod, and he’d been jamming to the local Egyptian Rap Station when the bush started burning? Let’s replay the scene.

Script 2: (Have Moses return with an iPod and ear phones. He is dancing and maybe singing to some tune. He sits down on a rock with his back to the bush. The bush lights up).

God: Moses! Moses!

(Moses is still listening to iPod, singing to himself and using his staff and a rock as drums).

God: (Louder and more forceful). Moses! Moses!

(Moses still doesn’t notice. Finally he gets up, with his back still to the bush and leaves the stage/room. The bush goes dark).

Discussion:

  • Was Moses listening for God?(No, he was too busy doing other things).
  • Did Moses hear God this time? (No).
  • Did God use a burning bush when He spoke to Adam and Eve? (No)
  • Did God use a burning bush to speak to anyone else in the Bible? (No).
  • Is it likely that God will use a burning bush to speak to you some day? (Probably not).
  • How might God speak to us today? (Write down suggestions).
  • When God created Adam and Eve, could they hear God? (Yes. They had a love relationship with God).
  • What happened to their relationship with God once they sinned? (They were afraid and ashamed. They did not have the same loving relationship).

Applying The Science

Do you remember the professor’s experiment tonight? What happened when he was trying to get Phinneus’ attention to help with the experiment? (Phinneus didn’t hear him because he was distracted).

How was Phinneus at observing what was in the water? (He didn’t see the beads because he wasn’t playing close enough attention).

That water filled with beads is like our lives. We have all kinds of distractions around us. We have our phones and our ipods. We have our friends and our sports. We have school and computers. Most of the things in our lives distract us from God. They keep us from hearing God when He speaks to us. Once Adam and Eve sinned they had distractions too. They let fear and shame get in the way of their relationship with God.

In tonight’s experiment, the professor used a colander to filter out the beads or distractions. What kind of a filter do we need? Let’s see what God’s word says. (Have someone read John 8:47).

What do we need to do to hear God? (We need to belong to Him. We need to spend time and effort building a relationship with him. If you truly belong to God, He will speak to you, and you will hear Him).

We need to filter out those distractions - how? Let’s look again at our list of ways God might speak to us. How can we get rid of the distractions so we can hear Him clearer? (Prayer, silence, meditation, reading the Bible, going to church, becoming a Christian).

Summarize

  • So, who is God? (Our creator). He created everything we see, and hear, and taste and touch. He even created you and me. Like Adam and Eve sometimes we fall short of all that he want for us. Sometimes, like Adam and Eve, we lose our way.
  • How do we become closer to God? (God will tell us what He wants us to do). Like Moses, we must listen. There are so many distractions in life, sometimes we forget to listen for God.
  • How does God speak to us? (Bible, prayer and the world around us).
  • We weren’t living in the time God walked the earth in the form of Jesus, but God is still speaking to us. He speaks to us all the time, we just have to listen.

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,
We want to build a relationship with you. We want to know you better. We want to be like you. We know we have a lot of distractions in our lives and will work hard to put those aside and concentrate on listening to you. Tell us and show us what it is you want us to do.
