Print

In A Nutshell

This is a fun Nature Bible craft that uses recycled materials. It takes a bit of work to collect, but is almost no cost to make. This Bible craft is part of Bible Boot Camp VBS, a 1-day Vacation Bible School Program.

Estimated Time

What You Will Need

  • Tin can or cake icing container (be sure you have smooth edges on any cans you use).
  • Straight sticks
  • Rubber Bands (natural color)
  • Raffia
  • Glue
  • Square-cut nails (two 1-1/2" and one 3-1/2")
  • Handi-Tak® (if you aren’t familiar with this product, it looks and feels like chewing gum. It is used to stick items to a wall that can be removed later without damaging the walls). There are also other brands, just use one that is white.
  • 20# hemp
  • Scissors

Preparation

  • Collect sticks and cut them to lengths about an inch taller than your container.

Directions

Pencil Holder

  • Put two rubber bands around your container
  • Add sticks one at a time by slipping them beneath the rubber bands.
  • Once the container is completely covered with sticks, roll the rubber bands to the center.
  • Wrap several strands of raffia around the rubber bands and knot.
  • Use a bit of glue in behind the sticks for added security.

Nail Cross

  • Overlap the small ends of the 1-1/2" nails and secure them with a small bit of Handi-Tak.
  • Attach to the large nail with another small bit of Handi-Tak.
  • Turn the cross over, so the small nails are in the back. Using the hemp, start in the lower left corner of the overlap. Leave about a 2" end so that you can tie it of later. Lay the hemp across to the upper right. Wrap around the back, then from top left down to bottom right. (See photo). Repeat 5 more times. Stop with end in the back. Tie ends together in a knot to secure. Clip excess.
  • Tuck the cross behind the raffia knot on the pencil holder. Put a little glue behind it to help secure it.

Extras
