Good Samaritan for Young Children Bible Lesson

In A Nutshell

With the story of the Good Samaritan, Jesus explains how we as Christians should treat others and the path we should take if we are walking with God. This Bible Lesson is part of Bible Boot Camp VBS, a 1-day Vacation Bible School Program.

Preschool, Elementary

Memory Verse:
“ your neighbor as yourself.” Luke 10:27 (NIV)

What You Will Need

  • Costumes (See below)
  • Boot Print Binoculars (See Related Activities).

Bible Lesson: The Good Samaritan

Choose children to act out parts. Provide costumes and props where possible.

  • Man: a robe and some items he would carry such as a basket, bundle of clothes, etc.
  • Robbers: robe and scarves to cover their faces.
  • Priest : robe and Bible or a cross.
  • Levite: robe and a prop such as a basket, water jar, etc.
  • Good Samaritan: robe, coins, blanket, bandages
  • Innkeeper: robe

There was once a man who was walking down a road. Some bad men stopped him on the road. They took everything he had, even his clothes. They hit him and hurt him and left him lying on the side of the road.

A priest came along the same road. When he saw the man who had been beaten, he crossed to the other side of the road and kept right on walking because he didn’t want to help. He didn’t like the way the man looked or how he lived.

Another man, a Levite, came down the same road. He did the same as the priest, he walked on the other side of the road and ignored the hurt man.

The next man to come down the road was a Samaritan. He was a good man. The “Good Samaritan” stopped to help the man. He did not see him as a good person or a bad person, he only saw him as a person who needed help. The Samaritan stopped and doctored the injured man’s wounds. He lifted the man up onto his donkey and took him to an Inn. He left him in the care of the Innkeeper who he paid with his own money. He told the Innkeeper to take care of the man and he would pay more on his return trip.

Discussion Questions:

  • Why didn’t the first two men stop to help the man who was hurt? (They didn’t like something about the man so they didn’t think he should be helped).
  • If Jesus walked on that road do you think he would have stopped to help the man? (Yes).
  • If we were walking down that road and saw the hurt man, what would Jesus want us to do? (Stop and help him).
  • Should we only help certain people? (No, Jesus says we should help everyone).
  • Who does God want us to love? (Everyone).
  • If we are walking with God, would we stop to help? (Yes)
  • What should you do if you see someone you don’t know who needs help? (Go get an adult to come and help)

Looking For God

Children take turns using the binoculars to look around the room, outside the window, etc. and identify things they see that God made as they walk with God.

Dear Lord,
Thank you for all the things you do for us. Help us to keep you in the center of our lives. Help us to think of all those we meet as our neighbors and to treat them as we would like to be treated. Help us to always think about what you want us to do and how we can walk with you. Amen

This lesson can be used with Bible Boot Camp. You can team this lesson with the “Good Samaritan Chant” Bible Song as a fun way to help reinforce the story.
